To Work a Gauge Swatch:
Using Long-Tail Cast-On and 3.25 mm. (US 3) needles, CO 38 sts.
K 5 rows. Change to 6.0 mm. (US 10) needles.
Row 1 (RS): K1, kfb each stitch to last st, k1.
Row 2 (WS): K1, p to last st, k1.
Row 3 (RS): K across row.
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 eight more times for a total of 9 times.
Repeat Row 2. Change to 3.25 mm. (US 3) needles.
With RS facing, k1, k2tog to last st, k1.
K 5 rows. BO loosely kwise.
Wash and block your swatch very gently. When thoroughly dry, it should measure 25.5 cm./10 in. wide by 12.7 cm./5 in. long. Allow the Stockinette portion to remain gathered when you measure the swatch overall.

CLARIFICATION on how to do those double and triple yarn overs:
Page 2, Row 11 which has the double yarn over, at the **: k1, then wrap the yarn around the needle twice, repeat from ** to 2 sts before Marker 2, etc. (For each stitch, there will be three loops = 1 for the knit st and 2 for the y2o).
Row 12: In this row, you will drop all the yarn overs (i.e., 2 loops) and knit the knit sts from the row before. Also k to Marker 1 (not Marker 4), i.e., k across the row in this fashion, until you get to the border 7 border sts.
Page 2, Row 17: This row is worked in the same way as Row 11, except that this time you will wrap the yarn around the needle three times for the triple yarn over. (For each stitch, there will be 4 loops = 1 for the knit st and 3 for the y3o).
 
Page 2, Row 18 should read:
*Sl 1 pwise, k6, turn work, k7, turn work again, repeat from * once more, sl 1 pwise, k6, sl m, k to Marker 1, dropping all the yo wraps from the previous row as you go, sl m, k7.
