The cool of the sea, combined with the coolness of the linen yarn, will grace your shoulders on a warm, summer day.

Worked in the round, in an arrangement of Garter Stitch and wrapped stitches, this light and gentle capelet will adorn and shimmer over a simple tank top or summery blouse.

INSTRUCTIONS

Difficulty: Easy

Techniques Used:

  • Knitting in the round
  • Creating a lacy fabric using Double-Wrapped and Triple-Wrapped Stitch patterns
  • Simple increases to shape the shoulder wrap
  • Blocking to finish

Finished Size:
76 cm./30 in. circumference around the neck; 155 cm./61 in. circumference at the base of the wrap. Depth is 20 cm./8 in.

Yarn Requirements:
250 m./270 yds. of sport weight or double knitting yarn

Needles and Notions:

  • 4.5 mm. (US 7) circular needle, 60 cm./24 in . long
  • 4.5 mm. circular needle, 80 cm./32 in. long
  • Stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round (or a length of yarn in a contrasting colour to serve the same purpose)
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:
12 stitches x 24 rows = 10 cm./4 in. square when worked in Garter Stitch in the round (i.e. knit one round, purl one round).

KNITTING DIRECTIONS:
With the yarn of your choice and the 4.5 mm. (US 7) circular needle, cast on 92 sts, place marker, and carefully join in a round, checking to make sure that there are no twisted stitches.

Round 1 : Purl across all stitches.

Round 2 : Knit across all stitches.

Round 3 : Purl across all stitches.

Round 4 (Increase Round) : * Knit 3, knit into the front and back of the next stitch. Repeat from * to the end of the round. (Total stitches = 115)

Round 5 : Purl.

Round 6 : *Insert tip of needle into the next st (which is the first stitch of the round), wrap the yarn around needle twice . Then knit the st, carrying all the wraps along with the needle to complete the st. Repeat from * to the end of the round.

Round 7 : Purl across all the stitches of this round, releasing all the wraps from the needle for each wrapped st. Tighten the stitches as you work this round to secure them.

Round 8 (Increase Round) : *Knit 4, knit into the front and back of the next stitch. Repeat from * to the end of the round. (Total stitches = 138)

Change to 80 cm./32 in. circular needle.

Round 9 : Purl across all stitches.

Round 10 : *Insert tip of needle into the next st (which is the first stitch of the round), wrap the yarn around needle three times . Then knit the st, carrying all the wraps along with the needle to complete the st. Repeat from * to the end of the round.

Round 11 : Same as Round 7.

Round 12 : Knit across all stitches.

Round 13 : Purl across all stitches.

Round 14 : Same as Round 6.

Round 15 : Same as Round 7.

Round 16 : Knit across all stitches.

Round 17 : Purl across all stitches.

Round 18 : Knit across all stitches.

Round 19 : Purl across all stitches.

Round 20 (Increase Round) : *Knit 5, knit into the front and back of the next stitch. Repeat from * to the end of the round. (Total stitches = 161)

Round 21 : Purl across all stitches.

Rounds 22-25 : Same as Rounds 16-19.

Round 26 : Same as Round 6.

Round 27 : Same as Round 7.

Rounds 28-31 : Same as Rounds 16-19.

Round 32 (Increase Round) : *Knit 6, knit into the front and back of the next stitch. Repeat from * to the end of the round. (Total stitches = 184)

Round 33 : Purl across all stitches.

Round 34 : Same as Round 10.

Round 35 : Same as Round 11.

Round 36-39 :   Same as Rounds 16-19.

Bind off loosely knitwise.

Weave in any loose ends.

Gently wash and block the shoulder wrap, pulling on the wrapped stitches to open up the pattern.

When it is dry, pull it over your head and wear!
