Peru Scarf

The April scarf for the International Year of the Scarf is Peru.
For this month, we have left Europe and headed for South America. The whole continent has a rich history of textiles and none as much as the country of Peru.

Brightly coloured textiles, woven and handknit in dense arrangements of patterns, many of them depicting native animals and plants, remind us of the vibrant clothing unique to this part of the world.
The Peru scarf uses a variation of the Ruching Stitch and is constructed like a column, with narrow and wider sections. The handpainted yarn of the wide sections contrasts with the solid-coloured narrow bands. The playful pom-poms are reminiscent of the tassels and pom-poms decorating the "chullos", those multi-coloured knitted caps typically worn by men in Peru.

The Peru scarf pattern includes step-by-step instructions on how to make your own pom-poms.
The yarn I used for the Peru scarf is Celestial Merino. Yarn kits for the Peru scarf (with just the right amount of yarn in the different colours plus the printed pattern) are offered in three colourways:
- Blue Vesuvius (as pictured)
- Fiery Fuchsia--with contrast colours: Deep Purple, Turquoise, Sunbeam, and Royal Blue
- Aquarius--with contrast colours: Turquoise, Seathrift, Sunbeam, and Marine Blue.

By now you can see the variety of styles and techniques that members of the International Year of the Scarf Club have been enjoying. The collection of scarves to date is here.
You can still join the club and receive all the patterns and club materials (which include Technique Sheets/tutorials, monthy newsletters, and other perks).
Come and join us to celebrate the world of knitting!
