Knitting Play

Here are the words of Martha, the knitter, being asked to knit works for a textile exhibition on the history of knitting in Knitting: A Novel by Anne Bartlett (NY: Houghton Mifflin, 2005, p. 114):
"I do it at home. I do it for fun, or for people I care about. I'm just mucking around, that's all, having fun. You make it sound important, like a kind of work. Well, it is work, but it's happy work, work that I like, that I do when I'm in the mood. But if I have to do it, I might not like it anymore. I won't be able to choose it. I don't like deadlines. I crack up when I get too busy, with too much stuff in my head. My work needs to be playing."
I couldn't have said it better myself.
