Ruffles for Tidal Streams

tidal_streams_ruffle_400

One of the defining features of the Tidal Streams scarf and stole is the ruffle at each end.

A knitter wrote me today asking for guidance in how to complete the ruffle--on the decrease row--in preparation for working the central and main section.

Here is what I sent her. Where there are 2 numbers, the first number is for the scarf version while the number in parentheses is for the full, stole version as pictured here.

On the decrease row (RS) for the ruffle:
1. Work the first 7 sts for the first, right-hand border as written.
2. The next 5 sts are reduced to one st (S2K3P) = slip 2 sts knitwise, k3tog, then pass the 2 slipped sts over the st just created by the k3tog.
3. For the next 33 (69) sts, work k3tog for every 3 sts.
4. The next 4 sts will be reduced to one st (S2K2P) = slip 2 sts knitwise, k2tog, pass the 2 slipped sts over the st just created by the k2tog.
5. For the next 36 (72) sts, work k3tog for every 3 sts.
6. Work another S2K3P over the next 5 sts.
7. Work the 7 border sts for the left hand side border as written.

Beg. Ruffle                  End Ruffle
7 border sts             7 border sts
5 sts                        1 st
33 (69) sts               11 (23) sts
4 sts                        1 st
36 (72) sts               12 (24) sts
5 sts                        1 st
7 border sts              7 border sts
Total = 97 (169)        Total = 40 (64)

I hope this makes it easier to follow the directions in the pattern for that row. After that, it is clear sailing until you have to reverse the process at the other end for the final ruffle.
