Blanket of Many Colours

When we learned that our friend Kathleen was seriously ill, we asked ourselves what we could do to help. And not surprisingly, we did what all knitters do in a crisis. We knit. We knit her a blanket.

In no time at all, it seems, all our knitting friends were marshalled into this joint project, one in which we could demonstrate our support and love in a tangible way. Lucy Neatby provided a general pattern which we were free to adapt as we wanted, as long as we achieved mutual gauge. And we did.
Each of us worked on our own squares, not knowing what the others were doing and whether the squares would work together or not. In record time (less than two weeks), there were enough squares for a full-sized blanket. With more left over to start another one...
On Friday, a group of us gathered for breakfast and coffee at the Gingerbread Haus in Halifax and gave Kathleen her blanket. There are no words for how surprised and delighted Kathleen was when we handed over her blanket. Suffice it to say: she didn't take it off again for the rest of the time we were together.
Kristen figured out that there are 3,000 stitches in that blanket and each one was made carrying beautiful Kathleen in our hearts.
